About this project The News-Press' health care reporter Frank Gluck interviewed dozens of doctors, nurses, social workers and patient family members between October and December to learn about neonatal abstinence syndrome in Southwest Florida and elsewhere in the state. The reporting revealed that the number of babies born exposed to painkillers has skyrocketed locally and statewide. Meanwhile, the medical community is grappling with the problem, which some doctors and nurses fear is under-reported and misdiagnosed.
